How to Type a Star Symbol in Excel & Google Sheets
In this tutorial, you will learn how to insert a star symbol in Excel and Google Sheets.
Insert a Star Using the Wingdings Font
In Excel, you can insert various symbols as text. One of those symbols is a five-pointed star. To insert a star symbol, follow these steps:
1. First, (1) select a cell where you want to insert a star (e.g., B2), then in the Ribbon, (2) go to the Insert tab, and (3) click on Symbol.
2. In the Symbol window, (1) choose the Wingdings Font first. After that, (2) select a star icon, and (3) click on Insert.
As a result, you get a star symbol in cell B2.
Insert the Star Symbol in Google Sheets
Unfortunately, Google Sheets still doesn’t have an option for inserting a symbol. There is a workaround that includes the help of Google Docs.
First (1) open a Google Docs file, then (2) go to Insert, (3) click on Special characters and (4) choose a star symbol. Following these steps, you will get a star symbol in Google Docs and you can simply copy it to Google Sheets. (See How to Insert Signs and Symbols in Excel & Google Sheets for more detail.)
